the drawings in this anamatic are good. The use of colour also goes well with the theme of the song and the movement works well.

Yer, looks real good = ) colour schemes suit the song real well and the random glasses and toothbrush suit the theme. Good camera movements etc and you can see through the anamatic how the video will look. good work! =D. Dan, Holly and Jake

the working animatic

This isn't the whole song but just a sample of it. We hope that this animatic captures the colour and the fun that we are aiming for in the video

I have chosen this great video as I feel it has been put together very well. It is a blantant rip off/"mickey take" of a stereotypical boy band video which made me laugh but has also included some very good angles, mise-en-scene, choreography and more. If I was to give this a grade I believe it would have got an “A” because it includes many aspects in which would make it of a great standard.

First of all it there are many different scenes and settings in which they have linked through characters which work well together. In fact the whole music video has been linked together through the use of a simple dance routine. The dance routine is simple sign language which emphasises the lyrics to the song.

A very wide range of camera shots have been used, within the first few second you have already seen about 3 different shots creating an instant attraction to this video. It also has different entrances to the different camera shots, it the very first shot there is a simple zoom out which is very effective and as you watch the video you are introduced to many different shots. Including long shots, close ups, interesting angles from above and below them. Each shot has at least one of the characters in it and is very character based. Through the camera shots you can tell that the boy band members are very important for the audience by making them look “sexy” for teenage girls who would watch that video.

This music video has a very well fitted tempo to it. It uses fast paced editing when the music is fast and slow editing when the music is slow. It also doesn’t give away everything at the beginning which can ruin a music video. There is large variety of different lengths of shot which makes it more interesting than flat samey scenes.

I think that the setting is the best part of this video as they have used soooo many different settings and have made them work with their song. Naturally for a boy band song there are cheesy sun sets and open fields which they have used well.

When the music turns into a more urban style the characters and setting turns into a urban feel with graffiti all around and “gangsta” style outfits.

They have also used a stage which focuses more on their dancing where they are wearing tuxedos.

Their last setting is in a car with a hot girl which is brilliant, in many pop videos there is an attractive girl which will bring in a new audience to watch the video, thus making sales higher. It's also set in a car which gives the scene a little difference.

Their performance plays a big part in this video, without the dance routines and confident characters this wouldn’t have been right. In most pop videos the superstars and arrogant and show off their bodies, in this case they have imitated them exactly right!

It fits in perfectly with the genre, this type of video would not have worked with a rock or “indie” video. The factor of imitation to pop stars has made this into a very stereotypical and cliché pop video.

Is that ok? FIX IT JACK MAKE IT BETTER PLEASEE!!

Whilst storyboarding

We decided to come up with the idea of walking into the room backwards at the begginning of the song similar to the beginning of the song 'smashed into pieces' by silverstein

Also the split screen that we have had ideas for with a head separated from a body will look similar to this

Contacting Au Revoir Simone

We have contacted the band, here is the myspace message I have sent them:

hey there,

We are 3 english students making a music video for a media studies project. We have chosen your song, 'The Disco Song' to use and would like to know what your thoughts on the song are, and if you would have any ideas of what you would imagine the video to be like. As part of the project we have also been asked to make contact with the band and note down our conversations in a blog.

So far as we don't really understand the meaning of the song were thinking of just making a completely random video that is full of colours and very bright.

When the video is complete, we shall send you a copy.

Hope you can find time to reply

Thanks

Jack, Louisa and Francesca

Mood board.

Costumes:

The choice of costume throughout our video is a key feature so its important that we get the look right. The song itself indicates a 'trendy' new rave-sskkkk(Not tooo emo!more indie, hoxton trendsetters) vibe, therefore in our video we must convey the style in an effective manner. Its about makeing the visauls intrestesting and createing a fashionable image for the band. Its all about the new brand of individual trend setters which are takeing britain by storm and effecting modern music.

Colourful Music Videos

The part in this viodeo where the two singers are wearing colourful clothes against a white background is similar to an idea that we are working on. the rest of the video is not...

This video is similar to certain aspects of our video idea, just the bright colours and the randomness with sweets...

The people danicng in front of the coloured screen with bright clothes is another idea:

Lyrics for 'The Disco Song' by Au Revoir Simone

There's a bad reason
She just can't stay home anymore
Expectations rising
Life's too short
It's too cliché

And you say, and you say
And you say, and you say
And you say, and you say
And you say, and you say

She knows when things are happening
Into the night, she's lost again
It's like no other feeling she says
"Here I am to save the day"

Wishing for the time of my life, she says
Wishing for the time of my life
Wishing for the time of my life, she says
Wishing for the time of my life
Wishing for the time of my life, she says
Wishing for the time of my life
Wishing for the time of my life, she says
Wishing for the time of my life

And you say, and you say
And you say, and you say
And you say

Pitch

The group has decided to make a pitch for 'The Disco Song' by Au Revoir Simone.

The video will revolve around different people/members of the band filmed individually to sing different parts of the song. The idea is to have their head/face in real time singing to the song, and their body animated, doing actions/dancing perhaps on a split screen so head on the left side, body on the right. This would be filmed with a white background most likely in the white room.

The indivduals bodies may also change either to different peoples bodies or maybe just their clothes will change.

The rest of the video will be colourful and bright to try and fit with the mood/atmosphere of the song (the feel good factor). The video would be filled with random small objects magnified and made huge, such as toothbrushes, ants and SKITTLES.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

There may be the use of animation to animate the objects and make them interact with the people in the video. Such as large ants crawling over the individuals or skittles raining from the sky.

We'd like the video to be full of colour such as these:

Skittles advert

Bravia TV Advert

The cuts will be in time with the speed of the song and the general aim is to make a happy, colourful and weird music video, which to be honest will have nothing to do with the lyrics but that is the beauty of art...

Choices! Choices! Choices!

After the first play through of the songs to choose from, the group was left scratching our heads because none of us had any ideas for any of the songs.
But yesterday we had a second listen to a few of the songs and managed to come up with some good ideas for a few of them.

'The Disco Song' by Au Revoir Simone, is a song that the group is considering pitching for because having listened to the song the group felt that there were many different things we could do for it, including animation, simply because the song is so different that it would just give us lots of options. With this song the group felt that there were just so many different things we could do, including the matching up of random objects similar to the following Kate Nash video.

'Dreaming' by Bassboosa is a song that the group is considering pitching for as it could be easily made due to its lyrics being about love, and we all imagined that Cambride could be a good location to shoot for the video, with the river and punts etc. The idea of it being shot in black and white was also suggested. The essential idea of the video would be probably to follow a female (the singer) on a journey/love story through the cities most romantic locations similar to the following Corinne Bailey Rae song:

'If looks could kill' by Camera Obscura is another video that the group is pondering making because the 'looks could kill' part of the song title is something that we feel could be played with in the video. One idea that was suggested was that we could have the band playing, whilst their clothes are changing. This could be used to comic effect as well. It could be similar to the following video by 'The Males'

We've now got to make our decision for the pitch... from one of the above.

BLURG.
